IRA Annuitization: Creating a Guaranteed Income Stream for Retirement and a Tax-Free Asset for Beneficiaries
Large IRAs are both a blessing and a curse: They provide a steady income stream in retirement, but their distributions are subject to ordinary income tax. Plus, as income in respect of a decedent (IRD), IRAs do not step-up at the participant's death -
whatever's left at death will potentially be subject to estate tax and possibly generation-skipping transfer tax. All in all, upwards of 80% of an IRA can be lost to taxes.
